Basenji (The Barkless Dog)

The Basenji is a small-sized dog belonging to the Hound Group. Originally from Central Africa, the breed carries that working heritage in its build and temperament. AKC registration statistics place it at #80 in popularity. Many owners just call them The Barkless Dogs. Adults typically stand 16–17 inches (40.6–43.2 cm) at the shoulder and weigh 22–24 pounds (10–10.9 kg), with males at the upper end of those ranges.

Published breed data puts a typical Basenji lifespan at 13–14 years. The main levers behind that number are body size (smaller dogs usually outlive bigger ones), genetics, and how consistently a dog stays lean, exercised and current on preventive veterinary care. For its size class this breed lands in the typical longevity band: neither notably fragile nor exceptionally long-lived. Owners who keep the weight off and the teeth clean reliably see the upper half of the range.

Energy runs high, so plan on real daily exercise — long walks, fetch sessions, or a job to do. Training takes patience with this breed, which is more independent-minded than eager to please. With socialization, children and this breed get along well; supervise the early years. Other dogs are usually accepted, particularly with early socialization.

Medium-sized homes suit this breed fine; true apartments depend on the dog and the schedule. Shedding is light, which makes everyday cleanup manageable.
