Tibetan Mastiff (TM)

The Tibetan Mastiff is a giant dog belonging to the Working Group. Originally from Tibet, the breed carries that working heritage in its build and temperament. It currently ranks #148 in AKC registration popularity. Many owners just call them TMs. Adults typically stand 24–26 inches (61–66 cm) at the shoulder and weigh 70–150 pounds (31.8–68 kg), with males at the upper end of those ranges.

Published breed data puts a typical Tibetan Mastiff lifespan at 10–12 years. The main levers behind that number are body size (smaller dogs usually outlive bigger ones), genetics, and how consistently a dog stays lean, exercised and current on preventive veterinary care. Against the average dog, giant breeds like this one sit on the longer-lived end of the spectrum. Owners who keep the weight off and the teeth clean reliably see the upper half of the range.

Energy is moderate: a daily walk plus some playtime keeps most of these dogs content. Trainability is average — consistent, reward-based sessions work well. With socialization, children and this breed get along well; supervise the early years. Other dogs are usually accepted, particularly with early socialization.

Medium-sized homes suit this breed fine; true apartments depend on the dog and the schedule. If pristine black clothing matters to you, this coat will test that preference year-round. Grooming is moderate, with regular brushing and periodic baths keeping the coat healthy. No low-shedding claim applies here. Allergy sufferers should spend time with the breed before committing.
