Can dogs eat avocado?

Only with precautions. Avocado contains persin, which is toxic to birds and livestock but only mildly problematic for dogs. The real canine risks are the fatty flesh upsetting sensitive stomachs and the pit — a genuine choking and intestinal blockage hazard. A lick of plain avocado is usually fine; guacamole adds onion and garlic, which are truly dangerous.

Watch for mild vomiting, diarrhea, choking or blockage if pit swallowed. Symptoms may appear within hours; when in doubt, call your vet.

Assess how much was eaten and whether seeds, pits, shells or seasoning were included. Small plain amounts usually need monitoring only; large or seasoned amounts warrant a call to your vet.
