Can dogs eat bread?

Only with precautions. Plain white and wheat bread is safe for dogs in small amounts and holds no nutritional value — it is filler calories. Raw dough, by contrast, is dangerous: it expands in the stomach and ferments into alcohol. Plain toast can even help settle mild stomach upset, but skip buttered, garlicked or raisin breads entirely.

Watch for bloating if overeaten; raw dough: distended abdomen, drunken behavior, collapse. Symptoms may appear within hours; when in doubt, call your vet.

Assess how much was eaten and whether seeds, pits, shells or seasoning were included. Small plain amounts usually need monitoring only; large or seasoned amounts warrant a call to your vet.
