Can dogs eat ice cream?

Only with precautions. Ice cream stacks three problems: lactose that many dogs cannot digest, sugar that feeds obesity and dental disease, and xylitol in some sugar-free brands — which is outright toxic. Chocolate and raisin flavors add poisoning risk. Frozen dog treats or a plain ice cube give the same joy without the aftermath.

Watch for diarrhea, gas, vomiting, xylitol symptoms if sugar-free. Symptoms may appear within hours; when in doubt, call your vet.

Assess how much was eaten and whether seeds, pits, shells or seasoning were included. Small plain amounts usually need monitoring only; large or seasoned amounts warrant a call to your vet.
