Can dogs eat ham?

Only with precautions. Ham is high in salt and fat, which strains the heart and pancreas, and holiday hams carry cooked bones that splinter. A corner of ham as a rare treat will not poison a healthy dog, but hams should never be a routine protein. The Pancreatitis risk is real and the fat content adds up quickly.

Watch for vomiting, diarrhea, pancreatitis signs: hunched posture, abdominal pain, fever. Symptoms may appear within hours; when in doubt, call your vet.

Assess how much was eaten and whether seeds, pits, shells or seasoning were included. Small plain amounts usually need monitoring only; large or seasoned amounts warrant a call to your vet.
